Frequently Asked Questions...
Q: I was recently converted, but the page still shows my old category. Why?
A: The company posts conversions several different ways. There's a list posted about 6 weeks ahead. And another a few days before the month changeover. I have found, however, that neither is "bulletproof." In fact, some pilots find themselves converted, per the pre-month list, are informed they are converted, but the monthly list doesn't even show it. IOW, let's say, approaching August, on 27 July you are informed you are "converted," but the August list comes out on the 4th and it shows you aren't. Oddly, you would show converted in DBMS.

I called crew planning and asked them how reliable the pre-month conversion list was, and was told it is not.

My issue is that when I update the master list with a new monthly list, several other tables are automatically updated in my database. So, while some have asked me if I could manually update them, I would prefer not to, and to let the program update itself the following month. In my example above, the September list will be correct, and all will be right with the world.

In 2021 I started using the announced pre-month conversions to update the list after the monthly list is published. There are occassionally pilots in the wrong category, still. But not as many as there had been.
Q: It's after the first of the month. Why hasn't the data been updated?
A: The new month's seniority list is normally posted by the company between the 2nd and 4th. Once it's posted it takes me about 30 minutes to massage it and upload it. If there's a delay it's because I'm not somewhere I can do that.
Q: How can I tell when I can hold something?
A: The easiest way is to look at the first page and see what the junior position is, then look at your Seniority Progression page and see when you'll hit that.

You can also, on the main page, enter a seniority number and it'll tell you when you'll hit it. So you can, using the category history pages "guestimate" what you'll need and use that number.

You might also look at the Category History page for that category and see the trend of whether it's getting more or less junior.
Q: How are instructors treated in the data?
A: They're an interesting problem. Particularly the FO instructors that rotate to the line as Captains. They're often too junior to hold it in category, and in the month they rotate to the line, they show on the seniority list, and skew the junior captain seniority down. So I don't include them in the numbers of line pilots. I exclude them so they don't skew the numbers. However, in the category lists I DO show them, but have a box that shows that they're instructors. So on the homepage, (the big relative position page) you might see the junior captain is "7331", but on the Category List page see him as 7881, but marked as an instructor.
Q: How do you determine who the instructors are if when they rotate to the line, they show as in the category?
A: Assuming instructors won't rotate back to the line for more than a month or two in a row, I look at the current month and the previous two, and if they were an instructor at any point in there, record them as instructors. Their relative position will show properly in category when they rotate to the line, though they cannot be the junior pilot.
